Nicola Valley Institute of Technology

Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) is a full and independent member of BC’s public post-secondary education system with legislated authority to grant its own course credits and transcripts. NVIT offers innovative, relevant credentials for future First Nations leaders in the fields of Wellness, Governance, Land, and Economic Development. These programs are guided by the commitment and vision of the Nicola Valley’s six local bands. This vision encompasses and honors First Nations traditional culture and values, and recognizes the need to balance these within the educational goals of the Institute’s curriculum. NVIT believes in a holistic approach to education whereby the student’s knowledge base is enhanced by those values unique to First Nations culture.

NVIT is made up of two campuses. Its original campus in Merritt BC as well as a Vancouver Campus (located on Mathissi Place in Burnaby BC near the border of Vancouver).

  • Transfer Credit

    Credit may be granted towards an NVIT credential for course work completed at another post-secondary institution. Transfer credit agreements registered with the BC Council of Admissions and Transfer (BCCAT) will be granted without assessment of approved course outlines from the sending institutions. Transfer credit applied for from institutions without standing transfer agreements for the specific course credit may be granted after the individual course outlines have been assessed.

  • Transfer Procedure
    • All Transfer Credit at NVIT must be applied for through the Registrar’s Office by filling out the Application For Transfer Credit form.
    • Only official transcripts or academic records will be utilized for the purpose of Transfer Credit assessment.
    • Established Transfer Credit Agreements
      1. Students will have official transcripts (or approved academic records) sent directly to the NVIT Registrar’s Office from the sending institution.
      2. The students will meet with the Registrar (or appointed alternate) and request the transfer credit be applied to their NVIT transcript.
      3. Once the Registrar (or appointed alternate) makes an assessment of available transfer credit within the guidelines of any NVIT academic policies, the student will be informed of all transfer credit available towards any NVIT credential.
      4. If the student decides to accept the transfer credit available the Registrar (or appointed alternate) will transcript the transfer credit and file the sending institution official transcript or approved record in the student file.
      5. The student will receive an updated transcript reflecting the transfer credit.
    • Transfer credit request process without established Transfer Credit Agreements.
      1. Students will have official transcripts (or approved academic records) sent directly to the NVIT Registrar’s Office from the sending institution.
      2. When required the Registrar will seek the advice of the appropriate Department Head or the relevant Dean for assessment of external course outlines.
      3. The students will meet with the Registrar (or appointed alternate) and request the transfer credit be applied to their NVIT transcript.
      4. Once the Registrar (or appointed alternate) makes an assessment of available transfer credit within the guidelines of any NVIT academic policies, the student will be informed of all transfer credit available towards any NVIT credential.
      5. If the student decides to accept the transfer credit available the Registrar (or appointed alternate) will transcript the transfer credit and file the sending institution official transcript or approved record in the student file.
      6. The student will receive an updated transcript reflecting the transfer credit.

Transfer Information
  • BC Transfer Student

    Applicants who have completed equivalent post-secondary level courses at other accredited institutions may be eligible for transfer credit. Please complete the Application for Transfer Credit form and submit to the Office of the Registrar.

     

    Applicants eligible for such credit may be asked to provide detailed course outlines for courses under consideration. Please note, calendar descriptions do not provide enough information to determine equivalencies.

     

    To fulfill residency requirements at NVIT, a minimum of 50% of the credits required for a credential must be completed at NVIT. As well, students wishing to complete a second credential at NVIT must complete additional courses equal to at least 50% of the total number of credits required for each additional credential.

  • Out-of-Province Transfer Student

  • Mature Student & PLAR

    For admission purposes, a mature student is one who is 19 years of age or older, and who has been out of school for at least one year.

    Adults are encouraged to apply to specific programs even if they are unable to meet specified educational requirements given that other factors such as maturity and work experience may be considered in some programs. If students do not meet minimum educational requirements for a desired program, they may demonstrate these requirements through an assessment and/or upgrade by completing appropriate program admission requirements and course pre-requisites.

  • International Student

    International applicants must follow the following steps:

    1. Submit official transcripts for all education completed at a grade/year 10 level and higher to the International Credential Evaluation Service for assessment. Please contact the International Credential Evaluation Service for more information regarding the evaluation process and associated fees.
    2. If English was not the language of instruction for the last three years of your education, you will also require an official TOEFL score including the TWE (or essay) portion with a minimum score of 270 (230 if the computer-based TOEFL taken) on the Listening, Structure/Writing, Reading portions and 5.0 on the essay portion.
    3. Once the above, as well as any program-specific admission requirements have been met, NVIT will provide a Full Offer of Admission. Learners must take this letter to the nearest Canadian Embassy or High Commission to apply for a Study Permit. When/if a study permit is issued, please forward a copy of that permit to NVIT and we will begin the registration process.
