Admission to University of the Fraser Valley

The UFV calendar lists information about the program, entrance requirements, document requirements, and application dates for each program, as well as general university regulations and admissions policies. Most programs accept students directly from high school or transfer students, while some programs required completion of post-secondary credit prior to admission.

There is a $45 application fee for new applicants. Applications can be submitted on line through pas.bc.ca , or students can print an application form from http://www.ufv.ca/ar/forms.htm and submit it by mail or in-person.

Applicants can find out if the program they are interested in is open for applications, by checking http://www.ufv.ca/ar/admissions/acceptapps.htm.

More information about admissions can be obtained from www.ufv.ca/admissions .

Guaranteed admission

Some UFV programs offer guaranteed admission for grade 12 applicants. This means that if you apply by the deadline (usually January 31 for the next fall intake) and if you meet the program entrance requirements, you are guaranteed admission to the program. For more details see http://www.ucfv.ca/Future_Students/Guar-Adm.htm

Admission grade point averages

The admission grade point average is a factor for entrance to many programs. It is normally calculated on all courses that are transferable to the program to which you are applying.

Transfer Credit

All policies pertaining to transfer credit are currently under review.

BC transfer students can use the BC Transfer Guide to plan transferable courses toward a UFV degree, however, not every course at every institution has been evaluated for transfer to UFV. Also, some institutions are not sending institutions so transfer from these institutions is not included in the BC transfer guide. There may be courses that you have taken that have not been evaluated, or that are not included in the BC transfer guide but have been evaluated for credit at UFV. For assistance, consult a credential evaluation officer. If a course has not been evaluated, you will need to submit a detailed course outline in order to have the course evaluated at UFV.

UFV routinely evaluates official transcripts* received from students enrolled in post-secondary programs other than vocational certificate programs. Students entering vocational or developmental programs who require transfer credit evaluation should submit the Request for Transfer Credit form , available at http://www.ufv.ca/ar/forms.htm .

* *Transcripts are considered official when they are bearing the institution's seal or authorized signature, and are in the original sealed envelope from the institution. Official transcripts should be sent directly from the post-secondary institution attended to UFV Admissions, 33844 King Road, Abbotsford, BC V2S 7M8. A certified translation is required for documents in a language other than English (some exceptions may be possible for documents in French).

Documents submitted become the property of UFV. Only documents that are considered by UFV to be irreplaceable will be returned to the student (on request).

Normally, all transferable courses are entered on a student’s record at UFV, however, the program advisor determines how much of the transfer credit will apply to any UFV program. Residency requirements (see below) must be met. Only courses with passing grades can be applied to any credential.

Applicability of credit towards one program at UFV does not guarantee that it will be recognized in the same way by another program, or at another institution

Transfer credit is not used in calculating a student's UFV cumulative grade point average, but it is used to determine grade point average for admission for many programs.

Residency requirements:

Residency requirements determine the number of transfer credits that may be used towards a particular credential, and may also limit the number of upper level credits that may be applied.

25-50% of the program must be completed at UFV, depending on the program. Depending on the program, a maximum of 60 or 90 credits may be obtained through transfer credit and/or prior learning assessment towards a degree. Many degrees also require that a minimum number of upper level credits be completed at UFV. Consult the UFV calendar for residency requirements and transfer credit limits for specific programs.

Age of transferred courses

Transfer of older courses in some disciplines is limited, e.g. computing-science or computer information systems courses taken more than five years ago, or business coursesmore than ten years ago,  may not apply to program requirements. Consult the program information in the UFV calendar at www.ufv.ca for more information.

Cross-listed and equivalent courses

Some courses at UFV are listed under more than one discipline (cross-listing). In other cases, two or more courses are similar and credit cannot be obtained for both courses. The UFV calendar description indicates when both of two courses cannot be used for credit. Individual course listings should be checked in the current UFV calendar for details that would affect transferability.
